Materials, Paint and Coatings

AZ Technology has a long history in the custom development and production of materials and pain /coatings* with tailored optical (UV, visible, NIR, FIR), electrical conductivity, thermal emittance and solar absorption signature properties. Originally developed for space and other harsh environments, many of these paints/coatings are designed to be low-outgassing and space stable and to meet toxicity and flammability requirements. Most of the spacecraft paint/ coatings (i.e. satellite paint/coatings) have been qualified or tested by NASA or on flight applications.

AZ Technology offers an existing line of paint /coatings with specialized optical properties for use on spacecraft hardware, satellites and terrestrial applications such as solar panels and observatories and can develop and produce paint with properties tailored to the customers' requirements. AZ Technology personnel have the background, experience and facilities to provide expert application of such paints to coat complex surfaces of varying sizes and a variety of substrates. In addition, AZ Technology offers measurement and testing services to provide accurate characterizations of customers' existing paints, coatings and materials.

Paint Pigment Processing

  • Measuring optical properties (solar absorption, emittance, reflectance, and transmittance)
  • insitu measurements in a combined Space Environment Effects Chamber with exposure to UV, VUV and particle radiation
  • Adhesion, viscocity, abrasion resistance, thickness, density analysis and electrical conductivity

  *Note: Paint refers to a liquid coating prior to application and coating to a fully dry coating after application. Also, terms reflectance, emittance and absorptance and terms reflectivity, emissivity and absorptivity are often used interchangeably.
